How much does an alpaca cost?

The nation's most popular internet site involved with alpaca sales, Alpaca Nation, has 22,909 alpacas listed for under $30,000 sorted into price categories as follows:

Under $2000 5011
$2,000-$5,000 4973
$5,000-$10,000 7154
$10,000-$15,000 3427
$15,000-$20,000 1585
$20,000-$25,000 555
$25,000-$30,000 203

Most of the animals listed at lower prices are unproven herd sires or "fiber males", males not considered to have herd sire potential for their owner's herds. Animals above $30,000 are mostly proven herd sires with brilliant show records or outstanding progeny. Most females are priced between $5,000 and $20,000.

Where will you get the alpacas?

We fully expect to receive donations of enough fiber animals to begin an adequate herd. We have already received donations of many which have already been placed on the reservation. More animals can be bought with cash donations to improve the overall quality of the herd and to select for such positive traits as density, staple length, and shearing weight. Although  the world fiber market pays a premium for ultra fine micron counts, the courser fiber is easier to hand spin and it will play an integral role in the weaving industry.

Where will the animals live?

A main breeding and distribution center, which now exists on a private ranch in Flagstaff will be moved to the reservation, where females, herd sires and baby cria will be cared for by our staff. Individual groups of  male fiber animals and starter herds will also be distributed to qualifying native families who have demonstrated through a screening process their commitment to our project and basic animal husbandry skills. They will be educated in the proper care and maintenance of an alpaca fiber herd. Natives may also barter for additional animals with rugs or blankets that can be sold to support the further acquisition of animals.
