Alpaca fiber is sustainable, natural, animal-friendly, durable, environmentally friendly, hypo allergenic, luxiourious, beautiful, rare and elite!

Alpaca Facts

Alpaca is classified as an elite fiber with cashmere and ultra-fine merino. Unlike sheep's wool, alpaca fibers have a smooth shaft, reducing the prickly feel often associated with wool. It is softer than cashmere, stronger and warmer than wool, water resistant, and lustrous. The animals are sheared once a year and the fiber is easy to process due to the lack of lanolin. The animals are thrifty, efficiently processing lower amounts of food than comparable livestock, and they have been raised for centuries in an environment much like Northern Arizona in the high desert environment of the Altiplano of South America at over 7000 feet elevation. The attention of the international fiber market has already been drawn to the North American herd which numbers only just over 200,000 animals. Our genetics, however, are much in demand world wide. The public is just beginning to understand the unique qualities that alpaca has to offer, however designers in Milan are ahead of the trend this year as they are designing with alpaca for high fashion. There are a growing number of options for processing all grades of alpaca fiber into luxiourios end products. This will only increase with further demand. The vast array of natural colors is uniquely showcased in the art of Navajo weaving. The artists that have begun weaving in alpaca have produced outstanding results.
